To expedite flood protection works in the disaster-hit Yamunotri Dham, heavy machinery will now be airlifted using Indian Air Force Chinook helicopters. A helipad is being constructed at the Garud Ganga area, which was recently inspected by a Cheetah helicopter.
Yamunotri faced extensive damage during the July 2024 floods, raising serious concerns about the ongoing protection works. Now, with the initiative of the priest community and district administration, permanent safety measures—similar to those implemented in Kedarnath—will be introduced in Yamunotri.
Considering the region’s challenging terrain, the Char Dham Yatra administration has coordinated with the Air Force for an airlift plan. A trial landing of Chinook helicopters will be conducted soon to ensure the safe transport of machinery to the site, aiming to accelerate restoration and protection efforts.
