Tension gripped the Dhela Range of Corbett Tiger Reserve after a youth climbed onto the roof of a forest outpost carrying a bottle of petrol, alleging that forest personnel had assaulted his uncle and another villager. The incident prompted the intervention of forest officials, police, and local public representatives, who persuaded him to come down safely.
According to information, Shiv Giri, a resident of Dhela village, and Nandu, a Van Gujjar, had gone near the forest area to collect firewood. During the incident, a forest guard and two daily-wage workers allegedly detained them and took them to the Dhela Forest Outpost. Officials reportedly issued a challan under the Forest Act and collected a fine.
The villagers have alleged that after the challan proceedings, forest personnel physically assaulted the two men, leaving them injured. When Shiv Giri’s nephew, Chandan Giri, learned about the incident, he reached the forest outpost carrying petrol and climbed onto the roof, demanding strict action and suspension of the officials involved.
A large number of villagers also gathered at the range office in support of the family. They further alleged that a woman forest employee misbehaved with them and used abusive language during the confrontation.
As the situation escalated, police, senior forest officials, and public representatives reached the spot. After prolonged discussions, the youth was convinced to come down safely. The injured party has also submitted a written complaint to the police, seeking legal action against the accused forest personnel.
Corbett Tiger Reserve Director Dr. Saket Badola said an inquiry has been ordered into the allegations, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. Kotwal Sushil Kumar confirmed that police have begun an investigation based on the complaint received.
