Haridwar – Pilgrim from Greater Noida was seriously injured after being shot by unidentified youths in the Kankhal area of Haridwar late Sunday night. The victim was part of a group carrying a special Kanwar containing 221 litres of Gangajal while demanding that the cow be declared the “Rashtra Mata” (National Mother).
According to police, the incident took place near Gurukul Kangri University along the highway. Ajay, a resident of Greater Noida, was travelling on foot with around ten companions after collecting Gangajal from Haridwar. The group had planned to complete a nearly 240-kilometre journey back to Noida.
As it was late at night, the pilgrims stopped near the highway to rest. During this time, an argument reportedly broke out between the Kanwar pilgrims and a group of youths standing on an overbridge nearby. Witnesses said the youths were creating noise, and when the pilgrims asked them to remain quiet, a verbal altercation followed.
Police said the dispute escalated when some of the youths came down from the bridge and approached the pilgrims. During the confrontation, one of the accused allegedly opened fire, and a bullet struck Ajay in the shoulder, leaving him seriously injured.
The sound of gunfire created panic in the area. Police teams rushed to the spot after receiving information and shifted the injured pilgrim to a nearby hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, doctors later referred him to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced treatment.
Following the incident, the accused fled from the scene. However, in their haste, they reportedly left behind a Bullet motorcycle, which has been seized by the police as evidence.
Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations and conducting raids to identify and arrest the accused. Senior police officials, including City Circle Officer Shishupal Singh Negi and Kankhal Kotwali in-charge Devendra Singh Rawat, reached the scene and gathered information from witnesses. Officials said the investigation is underway and efforts are being made to trace those involved in the firing.
