India’s Renewable Energy Capacity Reaches 217.62 GW

India’s renewable energy capacity has surged to 217.62 gigawatts as of January 20, 2024. The central government has emphasized the need to address regulatory, financial, and infrastructure challenges to meet its clean energy targets this year.

Renewable Energy Achievements in 2024

  • India added 24.5 GW of solar energy and 3.4 GW of wind energy in 2024. Solar capacity doubled, and wind capacity grew by 21% compared to 2023.
  • Solar energy contributed 47% of the total renewable capacity.
  • The rooftop solar sector expanded by 4.59 GW, marking a 53% growth over last year.

Key Contributors and Policies

  • The PM Surya Ghar Mukt Bijli Yojana facilitated the installation of 7 lakh rooftop solar plants in 2024.
  • Wind energy growth was led by Gujarat (1,250 MW), Karnataka (1,135 MW), and Tamil Nadu (980 MW), contributing 98% of the total.

With a target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030, India is accelerating progress through policy reforms, investments, and technological advancements.
