Tensions escalated in West Bengal on Sunday as supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) clashed with police in South 24 Parganas district over the ongoing controversy surrounding the Waqf law. The confrontation turned violent when ISF supporters attempted to breach police barricades set up to block their march.
According to reports, the protestors set police vehicles on fire and pelted stones, injuring several police personnel. The violence erupted as the crowd was stopped from attending a rally organized by ISF leader and MLA Naushad Siddique at Kolkata’s Ramlila Ground, for which police claimed no prior permission had been taken.
In protest, ISF workers blocked the Basanti Highway, causing severe traffic congestion. To control the situation, heavy police deployment was ordered, and a high alert was declared in the region. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the unrest shows signs of further escalation.
