Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away at the age of 90 on December 23 at 6:38 PM at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital. He had been battling chronic kidney disease for a long time. Two days ago, he was hospitalized after a fall at his home and later slipped into a coma. His daughter, Pia, confirmed the news of his demise. The last rites will be held on Tuesday evening at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.
Early Life and Cinematic Journey
Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Shyam Benegal made his first film at the age of 12 using a camera gifted by his father. He pursued a Master’s degree in Economics from Osmania University, where his passion for cinema blossomed.
Benegal became a towering figure in Indian cinema with films like Ankur, Manthan, Mandi, and Sardari Begum. He also made significant contributions to television and documentaries, with works such as Bharat Ek Khoj and Samvidhaan. Over his illustrious career, he received prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
