MP: The situation in Pithampur has escalated amid protests against the disposal of 337 metric tons of toxic waste from the Union Carbide factory linked to the Bhopal gas tragedy. The protests took a serious turn as two individuals attempted self-immolation and were admitted to Choithram Hospital in critical condition.
Sailana MLA Kamleshwar Dodiyar joined the agitation, launching a 24-hour hunger strike to pressure the government. He warned that burning the hazardous waste could lead to diseases like cancer, urging authorities to reconsider the disposal plan.
Protests Intensify
As soon as the toxic waste arrived from Bhopal, local residents and organizations united in opposition. The unrest forced police to seal routes connecting Pithampur with Indore and other areas. This blockade has resulted in a shortage of water and food supplies, leaving factory workers and residents distressed.
Despite appeals from the administration and public representatives, the protests show no signs of abating, with the situation remaining tense in the region.
