Dehradun, January 2025 – After two and a half years of meticulous preparation, Uttarakhand is set to become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will inaugurate the UCC portal and guidelines at the Main Seva Sadan today, marking a historic milestone.
Journey to UCC Implementation
- May 27, 2022: Expert committee formed.
- February 2, 2024: Committee submitted its report to the government.
- March 8, 2024: Bill passed in the state assembly.
- March 12, 2024: Presidential assent granted.
- Following this, technological infrastructure was developed, including online portals for citizen and official use. Comprehensive mock drills were conducted to ensure functionality.
Portal and Guidelines
The portal, set to go live today, will facilitate online registration for marriage, divorce, live-in relationships, inheritance, and other legal processes. Final tests conducted during a mock drill on Friday addressed all operational issues, making the system fully functional.
Key Highlights of Preparations
- Consultations with 43 stakeholders and 72 in-depth discussions.
- Feedback collected through 49 lakh SMS and 29 lakh WhatsApp messages.
- 2.33 lakh citizen suggestions, including 61,000 portal submissions, 36,000 postal inputs, and 24,000 emails.
This pioneering initiative will strengthen citizens’ rights and promote social reforms, positioning Uttarakhand as a leader in progressive governance.
