Forest officials at Corbett Tiger Reserve have successfully reunited a two-month-old elephant calf with its herd after a carefully planned rescue and monitoring operation in the Jhirna Forest Range of Ramnagar, Nainital district.
The calf was found alone by forest personnel on Monday, apparently separated from its family. Officials initially kept the animal under close observation in a nearby grassland, hoping that passing elephant herds would accept it. However, none of the herds took the calf along.
As night approached, forest officials shifted the calf to a nearby forest outpost to protect it from potential attacks by predators, particularly tigers, which pose a significant threat to lone elephant calves.
On Tuesday, the Forest Department made another attempt to reunite the calf with an elephant herd, but once again the effort was unsuccessful. Considering the circumstances, officials decided to continue caring for the calf while waiting for another suitable opportunity.
Their persistence paid off on Wednesday morning, when another elephant herd entered the Jhirna area. Forest personnel carefully released the calf at a safe distance from the herd. This time, the young elephant successfully joined the group, and the herd accepted it as one of its own before moving deeper into the forest.
Forest staff immediately informed senior officials about the successful reunion, bringing relief to the entire rescue team.
Corbett Tiger Reserve Director Saket Badola said the herd taking the calf along confirmed that the young elephant had originally become separated from the same group. He added that field staff have been instructed to continue monitoring the area to ensure the calf remains safe with its family.
The successful operation highlights the dedication of forest personnel in protecting wildlife and ensuring the safe rehabilitation of vulnerable animals in their natural habitat.
