In a new initiative aimed at strengthening cultural awareness among students, the Uttarakhand government has directed all schools to teach the history of the state’s glorious kings every Saturday. According to the Secondary Education Department, students from classes 6 to 12 will be taught about prominent rulers such as Vasudev Katyuri, Kanakpal, Ajaypal, Pradyumna Shah, Somchand, and Gyan Chand. The aim is to familiarize students with their bravery, leadership, and contributions to society.

Director of Secondary Education Dr. Mukul Kumar Sati stated that the initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes connecting students with India’s rich knowledge traditions and heritage. The policy also encourages education that builds values, awareness, and responsible citizenship rather than limiting history to dates and events.

To implement this, schools across the state—government, aided, and private—have been instructed to allocate a 30-minute session every Saturday in the last period. Teachers have been asked to present the content in a simple and engaging manner so that students can easily understand and relate to it.

The department has also suggested organizing quizzes and competitions related to the subject from time to time. This is expected to promote healthy competition among students and encourage deeper learning, with rewards for top performers.

The curriculum will highlight key historical contributions, including the establishment of the Katyuri dynasty, the unification of Garhwal’s 52 forts by Ajaypal, and the resistance against Gorkha invasions by Pradyumna Shah. Similarly, students will learn about the Chand dynasty in Kumaon, including rulers like Somchand, Baz Bahadur Chand, and Gyan Chand.
