No Helmet, No Petrol: Uttar Pradesh Implements Safety Policy

In a decisive move to reduce road accidents and fatalities, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a “No Helmet, No Petrol” policy for two-wheeler riders. The transport department has issued strict instructions to enforce this rule across the state.

Mandatory Enforcement of Rules

Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh issued a directive on January 8, instructing petrol pump operators to deny fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets. This rule also applies to pillion riders. The directive has been sent to all district magistrates and divisional commissioners for immediate implementation.

Alarming Death Toll Sparks Action

During a review meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, it was revealed that road accidents claim 25,000–26,000 lives annually in the state, with a significant portion attributed to the non-use of helmets. The new policy aims to enhance road safety and save lives by making helmets mandatory for all two-wheeler users.

Awareness Campaigns to Complement Policy

The transport commissioner emphasized that the “No Helmet, No Petrol” policy was initially launched in Gautam Buddha Nagar in 2019 but was not expanded statewide. Now, it will be strictly enforced across all districts. Additionally, the government plans to run extensive road safety awareness campaigns through social media, print, and electronic platforms.
