The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf Amendment Bill was presented in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, drawing strong opposition from the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC). Opposition leaders claimed that their dissent notes were ignored, making the report one-sided.
Kharge Calls Report Unconstitutional
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge labeled the report unconstitutional and undemocratic, demanding that it be sent back to the JPC. He accused the government of suppressing MPs’ opinions and including external stakeholders in the discussions.
TMC’s Objection, Government Defends Report
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee also alleged that their dissenting opinions were not included in the report. However, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju rejected these claims, stating that the opposition’s views were duly considered.
JPC Chairman’s Clarification
JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal defended the report, explaining that the committee heard all viewpoints over six months. He emphasized that the majority’s decision prevailed, while minority opinions were overruled as per parliamentary procedure.
