The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has declared Dehradun Airport a major airport after its annual passenger capacity crossed 4 million. This move is expected to enhance facilities and elevate Dehradun Airport to international standards. Following this upgrade, Dehradun Airport will now be evaluated under the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey instead of the previous Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) survey. ASQ surveys are conducted every three months and adhere to international benchmarks, including airports from 18 Asia-Pacific countries and 15 airports in India.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dehradun Airport handled 1.3 million passengers annually. By 2023, this number crossed 1.5 million, and in 2024, it surged past 3 million, ultimately reaching 4 million, prompting AERA’s decision. The new status could pave the way for expanded domestic services and potential international flights, strengthening Uttarakhand’s aviation infrastructure.
