Chamoli: A government-backed insurance scheme has provided financial support to a family in Mehalchauri after the death of a woman who had enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY).

Anita Devi, a resident of Maikhouli village in Gairsain block of Chamoli district, held a savings account at the State Bank of India (SBI) Mehalchauri branch. She had opted for PMJJBY by paying an annual premium of ₹436.

Anita Devi, wife of Virendra Singh, died in June after undergoing prolonged treatment for a serious illness. Following her death, the bank processed the insurance claim and provided the family with a cheque of ₹2 lakh within less than two months.

Virendra Singh, who works as a daily wage labourer, said the insurance scheme had provided important financial support to the family. He said most of their savings had already been spent on his wife’s treatment, but she could not be saved.

He said the insurance amount would help him support his children and continue their education.

SBI Explains Benefits of Government Insurance Schemes

SBI Mehalchauri branch in-charge manager Anil Giri said PMJJBY provides insurance cover of ₹2 lakh in case of death, subject to the scheme’s eligibility and terms, against an annual premium of ₹436.

He also said that the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), available at an annual premium of ₹20, provides ₹2 lakh in case of accidental death and ₹1 lakh in case of specified total disability, subject to the applicable conditions.

According to Giri, eight families of account holders have received benefits under these government insurance schemes during the past three years.

The insurance facilities are available through eligible bank accounts, including accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and existing savings accounts.

The bank also highlighted other government-backed financial schemes, including the Atal Pension Yojana and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, as options available to eligible customers.
