PM Modi Embarks on a Visit To Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for a three-nation tour to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia from June 15 to 18. This is his first overseas visit after Operation Sindoor and is being seen as a significant diplomatic move to strengthen India’s bilateral relations and strategic ties with the European Union and Mediterranean region.

The tour began with his arrival in Cyprus, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 23 years. The visit carries symbolic importance, especially in the context of Turkey’s past support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Analysts view Modi’s visit to Cyprus as a clear diplomatic message to Turkey, which has occupied one-third of Cyprus since 1974 and maintains hostile relations with the island nation.

In Canada, PM Modi will attend the G7 Summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney. The visit is expected to focus on economic cooperation, defence partnerships, and global strategic alignment.

Cyprus and Turkey have been at odds since 1974 when Turkey invaded parts of Cyprus following a coup backed by Greece. Despite UN intervention, Turkey continues to occupy the northern part of Cyprus, which is not internationally recognized. Modi’s visit is expected to boost diplomatic and strategic cooperation with Cyprus and reflect India’s firm geopolitical stance in the region.
