PM Modi Mann Ki Baat: Emergency was an Assault on Democracy

In the 123rd episode of his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on key national and global developments including the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, International Yoga Day, religious pilgrimages, India’s expanding social security coverage, and the rising sports culture in Assam’s Bodoland.

PM Modi strongly criticised the Emergency imposed in 1975, calling it a “dark stain on India’s democracy.” He said, “The Constitution was strangled, judiciary was attempted to be enslaved, and thousands were jailed under MISA. But in the end, democracy triumphed.”

Turning to the success of International Yoga Day, celebrated globally on June 21, Modi described it as a mass movement. He noted large-scale events held in Visakhapatnam, the Himalayas, Telangana, and abroad. This year’s theme — “One Earth, One Health” — he said, is not just a slogan but a guiding principle for humanity.

On the topic of spiritual pilgrimages, PM Modi said that such events, including the Jagannath Rath Yatra, reflect India’s unity and spirit of service. “Religious journeys are not only spiritual paths but also platforms for national integration,” he said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s achievements in welfare schemes, stating that over 95 crore Indians are now benefiting from social security programs, compared to just 25 crore in 2015. He added that WHO declaring India trachoma-free is a significant health milestone made possible by tireless health workers.

Praising the recent CEM Cup football tournament in Bodoland, Assam, PM Modi noted the participation of over 70,000 players, including a large number of girls. He hailed it as an example of social transformation through sports.
