Nainital: The Uttarakhand High Court has ruled on a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding student union elections in state-run universities and colleges. A division bench, headed by Acting Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Vivek Bharti Sharma, disposed of the PIL based on the state government’s directive.
The PIL was filed by Mahipal Singh, a social worker from Dehradun, who cited reports published on October 25 about upcoming student union elections in government universities and colleges. Singh argued that despite the government issuing an academic calendar on April 23, 2024, mandating student union elections by September 30, 2024, the universities failed to hold the elections or seek directions from the state government. He claimed that this violated the Lingdoh Committee recommendations and negatively impacted students’ education.
The court’s decision to dispose of the PIL came in light of the government’s order, effectively confirming that there will be no student union elections in Uttarakhand’s universities this year.
