A major religious conversion racket led by Changur has been uncovered in Dehradun, with fresh developments emerging during the investigation of an earlier case registered in Ranipokhri. A second FIR has now been filed at Premnagar police station after another woman, originally from Bareilly, was found to have been targeted by the same network. She was reportedly being prepared to be sent to Dubai after being converted to Islam, with religious training allegedly conducted by clerics in Pakistan.
According to police, money was routed through Dubai to Pakistan for the woman’s religious education. The case names six accused, including Abdur Rahman of Sahaspur. Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh confirmed that the UP ATS had earlier arrested Rahman based on intelligence inputs received on July 17. Subsequent investigations revealed he was involved in attempting to convert a woman from Ranipokhri, with plans to take her to Delhi.
During questioning, the woman — renamed Maryam after her conversion — revealed more names associated with the group, including another woman, “Sumaiya,” studying in Premnagar. Originally from Bareilly and a student of Central School with degrees in mathematics and fine arts, she was allegedly influenced over the phone in 2022 and asked to recite the kalma. She was then introduced to Islamic teachings via Zoom meetings and added to WhatsApp groups linked to Pakistani clerics.
Sumaiya reportedly paid money to these clerics via middlemen, with funds sent first to Dubai and then redirected to Pakistan. The gang allegedly planned to marry her off to a Muslim man in Dubai. After intervention from her family and police counselling, a case was registered based on her brother’s complaint.
All six accused, currently in the custody of the UP ATS, will be brought to Dehradun on a B-warrant. A police team has been formed and wil
