Continuous heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has triggered alarming land subsidence across several hill districts, forcing residents to abandon their homes. Villages in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Tehri, and Pauri Garhwal are witnessing severe cracks in houses, while many families fled overnight in fear. In several areas, authorities have directed people to vacate homes and move to safer locations.
The situation has worsened as cracks have also appeared on key highways, including Gangotri and Yamunotri routes, disrupting movement. According to the Public Works Department (PWD), 520 roads across the state remain blocked. This includes five national highways, 27 state highways, 17 main district roads, eight other district roads, and 164 rural routes. District-wise, Pauri has 71 blocked roads, Tehri 43, Chamoli 53, Rudraprayag 43, Uttarkashi 65, Dehradun 49, Haridwar five, Pithoragarh 51, Champawat nine, Almora 86, Bageshwar 12, Nainital 32, and Udham Singh Nagar one.
Meanwhile, the state government has announced a pothole-free road campaign starting September 15. Chief Engineer of PWD, Rajesh Sharma, stated that a plan has been prepared to repair damaged roads, with the target of making all roads pothole-free by October 31.
