Despite challenges, Uttarakhand’s health sector has shown improvement, with recent figures from the Government of India’s Sample Registration Survey (2023) confirming a decline in child mortality rates. The state recorded a three percent fall in neonatal and infant mortality and a four percent drop in under-five mortality compared to 2021.
According to the survey, the neonatal mortality rate in Uttarakhand stood at 14 per 1,000 live births in 2023, down from 17 in 2021. Similarly, the infant mortality rate decreased from 23 in 2021 to 20 in 2023. The mortality rate of children under five years also dropped from 27 in 2021 to 23 in 2023.
The steady decline is attributed to institutional deliveries, 100% immunization drives, and enhanced maternal care supported by ASHA workers. Expanded neonatal facilities in hospitals have also contributed, including special newborn care units, newborn stabilization units, neonatal ICUs, newborn corners, and kangaroo mother care units.
Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat noted that the report is encouraging and proves that the state’s healthcare system has strengthened. He emphasized the vital role of ASHA workers, whose tireless efforts ensured better maternal and child healthcare. The government, he added, remains committed to further reducing infant and child mortality rates in Uttarakhand.
