CJI Gavai clarifies temple remarks, says ‘I respect all religions’

Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai responded to criticism over his remarks during a hearing related to Khajuraho’s Javari temple case, saying he respects all religions. The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a petition seeking installation of a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the temple, terming it a publicity-driven plea.

CJI Gavai stated that he was informed about his comments being circulated on social media, but reiterated that he holds equal respect for every faith. The petition, filed by Rakesh Dalal, had requested restoration and consecration of the damaged idol at the UNESCO World Heritage site in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. A bench of CJI Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran dismissed it on May 16, observing that the matter was not maintainable.

During the hearing, CJI remarked that if the petitioner was a true devotee of Lord Vishnu, he should pray and meditate instead. He also pointed out the presence of a grand Shiva Linga at the site, suggesting worship there if the petitioner had no objection to Shaivism.

Following these observations, social media witnessed widespread criticism. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta defended the Chief Justice, noting that disproportionate reactions on social media often distort context. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal added that unchecked online commentary has become increasingly problematic. CJI Gavai also referred to recent violent protests in Nepal while highlighting the issue of unrestrained public discourse.
