Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday announced that the state government will soon implement the Sports Legacy Plan to establish Uttarakhand as a sports hub. Under the plan, 23 sports academies will be set up in eight major cities, where nearly 900 world-class athletes and around 1,000 other players will receive advanced training every year.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Asian Cadet Cup at Gaulapar International Stadium, Dhami said it was a matter of pride for Uttarakhand to host the Asian fencing event for the first time in India. He highlighted that the government has developed world-class sports infrastructure in the state, including a modern stadium built at a cost of ₹517 crore and advanced sports equipment worth ₹100 crore. This, he said, has positioned Uttarakhand as an important venue for both national and international competitions.
Dhami further mentioned that the state’s first sports university is being set up in Haldwani and a women’s sports college in Lohaghat. As per the new sports policy, medal winners at the national and international level are being offered out-of-turn government jobs. The 4% sports quota, which was previously discontinued, has also been reinstated.
He also announced that Pantnagar Airport will be upgraded to international status, with discussions already held with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The foundation stone for the project will be laid soon. Additionally, he emphasized the need for better hotels and improved connectivity, including new train services, to support the growing sports ecosystem in the state.
Addressing players and spectators, the Chief Minister urged everyone to stay vigilant about environmental and water conservation and to spread awareness. He also appealed to the youth to stay away from drugs and began his speech with the slogan “Bharat Mata ki Jai.”
