Moqi, China, September 17 – Yesterday, India triumphed in the men’s Asian Champions Trophy by defeating hosts China 1-0. This marks India’s fifth victory in the tournament’s history. India previously won titles in 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023.
Tense Final with a Defensive Battle
India’s path to victory wasn’t easy. China’s defense proved strong, frustrating India’s forwards throughout much of the match. The game began nervously for both sides, with India unable to break through China’s defensive wall early on.
In the first half, Vivek Sagar Prasad made an attempt from the left flank, sending a precise pass to Sukhjeet, who tried a backflick shot. However, China’s goalkeeper Wang Weihao was ready, blocking the ball and keeping India at bay.
India’s Nilakanta Sharma also took a shot from the right side, but once again, Wang managed to save, leaving the score 0-0 at halftime.
India Seizes the Moment
As the second half progressed, the intensity of the game increased. Both teams continued to battle for control, with India maintaining more possession but struggling to convert opportunities into goals.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh played a vital role in keeping India’s attack composed, while goalkeeper Krishan Pathak made crucial saves to deny China a lead. China earned a penalty corner late in the first quarter, but Pathak blocked it, ensuring the game stayed goalless.
Finally, India found the breakthrough in the final quarter. After some quick passes between Manpreet and Nilakanta, the ball reached Harmanpreet, who delivered it to Jugraj Singh. Jugraj capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the only goal of the match, putting India ahead 1-0.
India Holds Off China to Claim Victory
Despite China’s efforts to equalize, India’s defense stood firm. With time running out, India successfully maintained their lead, securing the championship for the fifth time.
This victory continues India’s dominance in the Asian Champions Trophy and adds another milestone to their already impressive record.
