Dehradun – A major accident was narrowly avoided near St Jude Chowk in Dehradun after a private bus carrying students caught fire, prompting a swift rescue by traffic police and fire department teams. The bus was part of an all-India tour group travelling from Tamil Nadu.
Police officials said around 40 students were on board the bus, which was heading from Haridwar to the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun. As the vehicle reached the St Jude Chowk area, thick smoke suddenly began rising from the engine section and quickly entered the bus.
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the driver stopped the bus on the roadside. Traffic police personnel present nearby immediately began evacuating the students. Using the bus doors and windows, all students were taken out safely before the fire could spread further.
A fire brigade team reached the spot soon after and brought the fire under control. Some students complained of discomfort due to smoke inhalation and were taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary medical treatment. No serious injuries were reported.
