In the train derailment case at Dehradun railway station, a chargesheet has been filed against the accused shunting master by the operating department. The official has been given one month to present his response, after which disciplinary action may be taken, including a halt on promotion and salary increment.
The incident occurred on February 23 during shunting operations at the station, when a coach of the Nanda Devi Express derailed while being moved to platform number five. Reports indicate that the mishap happened due to incorrect communication with the loco pilot, following which the train collided with a wall. Initial findings pointed towards improper signalling by the shunting master.
After the incident, senior officials including the DRM reached the spot and ordered a detailed investigation. A joint inquiry involving the operating, PWI, loco and signal departments was conducted. A comprehensive report of over 25 pages was prepared and submitted to the Indian Railways Moradabad Division office.
The investigation report highlighted negligence on the part of the shunting master, based on which the chargesheet has been issued. Officials said disciplinary action will be taken after reviewing the response of the accused. Apart from stopping promotion and salary increment, the employee may also be sent for counselling and safety seminars.
Following the incident, railway authorities have introduced stricter safety measures. The speed limit during shunting has been reduced from 8 km/h to 2 km/h, and instructions have been issued to install display boards at stations. Staff responsible for signal clearance have also been directed to move alongside the train during operations. Several additional safety rules have also been revised.
