Uttarakhand’s Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat has announced that from now on, children will be admitted to Class 1 in both government and private schools only if they have completed six years of age. No exceptions will be allowed for children below this age.

The minister clarified that this decision is in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP), and it will be strictly implemented in all schools across the state. While acknowledging potential initial challenges, he emphasized that there will be no relaxation in the rule. Officials have been directed to inform private schools about the new guideline. For younger children, the state has arranged for Bal Vatika (pre-school) facilities.
