In Assam’s Dima Hasao district, rescuers recovered another body on Saturday from the flooded Umrangso coal mine, bringing the total to two. The deceased, identified as 27-year-old Lijen Magar from Kalamati village, was found six days after the incident. Earlier, the body of a Nepali worker was retrieved on Wednesday. On Monday, nine workers became trapped when water suddenly flooded the illegal mine.
CM’s Statement and Rescue Efforts
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared updates on social media, stating that ONGC and Coal India machinery are being used to pump out water. He expressed condolences to the bereaved families while acknowledging the slim chances of survival for the remaining seven workers.
Illegal Mining and Accountability
Following the tragedy, authorities arrested the mine supervisor, who had been absconding. The mine was being operated illegally, raising serious concerns about mining safety and regulation in the region.
