A Common Man, Extraordinary Leader
Born in a modest household in Haldwani after being displaced from Pakistan, Dr. Singh faced hardships from an early age. Orphaned young, he was raised by his grandparents. Despite studying under the dim glow of lanterns, his dedication led him to prestigious institutions like Oxford and Cambridge. Even as Prime Minister, he preferred simplicity, favoring a Maruti 800 over luxury cars.
Architect of Economic Reforms
In 1991, during an economic crisis, then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao appointed Dr. Singh as Finance Minister. Dr. Singh introduced liberalization policies, opened the gates to foreign investment, revised import-export norms, and removed restrictions on industries. His reforms rescued India from a dire economic situation, increasing foreign reserves from $1 billion in 1991 to $290 billion by 1998.

Dr. Singh served as a teacher, economic advisor, RBI Governor, and Planning Commission chief before leading the nation as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.
