A tragic road accident on the Bhimtal–Haldwani route near Ranibagh claimed the life of a five-year-old girl, triggering public outrage and chaos on the highway. The victim, identified as Kanak, died on the spot after being hit and dragged by a roadways bus.
According to eyewitnesses, a Rudrapur depot bus (UK06 PA 1726) hit the child from the front and continued moving, dragging her for nearly 20 metres. The impact proved fatal. Two other children who were with Kanak at the time of the incident narrowly escaped the accident.
The incident led to immediate anger among locals present at the spot. Protesters pelted stones at the bus, damaging its windows, and created a ruckus demanding strict action against the driver.

Traffic movement was severely disrupted following the incident. A long jam stretched from Tikonia to Bhimtal Tiraha, Jyolikote, and Saldi, affecting commuters for several kilometres. Police teams rushed to the scene and worked to control the situation and restore order. Authorities are investigating the incident, and further action is expected based on the findings.
