Sitarganj: Police have busted an interstate bike theft gang and arrested two accused involved in stealing motorcycles from different areas of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Eight stolen two-wheelers have been recovered from their possession, while another gang member is still absconding.

Police said bike theft incidents had increased in the Sitarganj area over the past two months, following which a special team was formed under the supervision of Kotwali in-charge Sundaram Sharma to trace the gang. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Karan Sikdar of Pulbhatta and Samar Singh of Shaktifarm near the dry river bridge in the SIDCUL area on Thursday night. A stolen Bullet motorcycle taken from the Chadak fair in Shaktifarm was recovered from them.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that they, along with their associate Amarjeet Singh, used to steal motorcycles from Sitarganj, Kichha, Rudrapur, Bazpur, Bahedi and Bareilly before selling them in Nepal. Police said the accused confessed to stealing nearly 25 motorcycles over the past year. According to them, stolen Bullet motorcycles were sold for around Rs 30,000, Splendor bikes for Rs 15,000, Apache bikes for Rs 18,000 and scooters for nearly Rs 20,000.

Based on the information provided by the accused, police recovered seven more stolen vehicles, including Bullet, Apache, Platina, Discover, Splendor motorcycles and a scooter. Some of the recovered vehicles were linked to theft cases registered in Bareilly and Bahedi police stations.

Police said efforts are underway to arrest the absconding accused and further investigation into the gang’s network is continuing.
