Uttarakhand Assembly Special Session Today Over Women’s Reservation Debate

A special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly will be held today to discuss the issue of women’s reservation, with indications of sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition. The discussion is expected to center around the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, and could witness heated debate inside the House.

The state government has convened the one-day session to deliberate on the theme of women’s rights in a democratic framework. During the session, members from both sides will present their views on providing 33 percent reservation to women in Parliament and state assemblies. The ruling party is likely to back the Centre’s amendment proposal related to the Act.

The government is also expected to bring a condemnation motion against the opposition for voting against the proposed amendment in Parliament. At the same time, opposition parties have prepared a counter-strategy to question the government on issues related to women’s safety, rights, and implementation delays.

Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya stated that the government is misleading the public on the women’s reservation issue. He said opposition legislators will participate in the debate with facts and demand accountability on women’s rights and security. The opposition is also likely to push for passing a resolution in the Assembly urging the Centre to implement the 2023 women’s reservation law without delay.

On the other hand, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Subodh Uniyal defended the Centre’s move, stating that the Act was brought under the guidance of Narendra Modi to ensure 33 percent reservation for women. He accused the opposition of obstructing its passage.

Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan urged all members to maintain decorum during the proceedings and participate constructively in the discussion.

With both sides gearing up for confrontation, the session is expected to witness intense debate and possible disruption as political differences over women’s reservation come to the forefront.
