Bageshwar: An unusual spell of snowfall on the higher peaks overlooking the Sorag region of Kapkot tehsil on the last day of May has surprised residents and raised fresh concerns about changing weather patterns in the Himalayas.
With June approaching, alpine meadows and high-altitude areas are normally bustling with shepherds and grazing livestock. However, an unexpected change in weather covered the surrounding mountains with a fresh layer of snow, creating winter-like conditions in the region.
Following the snowfall, temperatures dropped significantly across Himalayan villages. Residents reported a sharp increase in cold conditions, prompting many families to take out warm clothing and light fires to stay warm.
The sudden weather shift has also affected pastoral communities. Shepherds who had moved towards the high-altitude bugyals with their sheep and goats have started returning to lower areas due to the snowfall and cold conditions.
Local resident Diwan Singh Danu, 60, said he had never witnessed snowfall at the end of May or the beginning of June during his lifetime. He noted that areas where livestock usually graze during this period are now covered with snow, indicating an unusual change in seasonal conditions.
The event has intensified discussions around climate change and its impact on Himalayan ecosystems. Over the past few years, the region has experienced several unusual weather events, including untimely rainfall, severe hailstorms and snowfall during warmer months.
Environmentalist Kishan Singh Malda said the snowfall should be scientifically studied to determine whether it is an isolated weather event or part of a broader shift in the Himalayan climate cycle. Experts believe such changes could have long-term implications for agriculture, livestock rearing, water resources and the fragile mountain ecosystem.
Researchers and environmental observers have emphasized the need for continuous monitoring and detailed studies to better understand emerging climate trends in the sensitive Himalayan region.
