Badri Nath Highway Accident: Bus Brake Failure Averted Major Tragedy, 32 Pilgrims on Board

Joshimath (Chamoli) – An accident was narrowly averted on the Badrinath Highway on Thursday after a bus carrying 32 pilgrims suffered a sudden brake failure near Lambagad while returning from Badrinath Dham.

According to officials, the bus (registration number CH02AA5747) lost its brakes while descending near Lambagad. Displaying remarkable presence of mind, driver Bahadur Singh steered the vehicle away from the gorge and deliberately rammed it into roadside rocks. The bus climbed onto the rocks and came to a halt, preventing what could have been a catastrophic accident.

Two Pilgrims Injured –

There were 32 pilgrims on board the bus at the time of the incident. Two passengers sustained minor injuries in the accident.

After receiving information, police and emergency teams rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Primary Health Centre at Pandukeshwar for treatment.

The injured have been identified as:

  • Kamlesh (60), wife of Chandanmani Sharma, resident of Ram Vihar Kardana, Birpur, Punjab.
  • Omans (14), son of Raman Sharma, resident of Maruti Vihar, MG Road, Gurugram, Haryana.

Doctors provided immediate first aid to both injured passengers and confirmed that they are out of danger.

Traffic Restored, Pilgrims Sent Safely

Govindghat Police Station in-charge Rukm Singh said the police reached the accident site soon after receiving the alert. Traffic on the Badrinath Highway was regulated, and arrangements were made to transport the remaining pilgrims safely to their destination.

Preliminary information indicates that the accident occurred due to a sudden brake failure. Authorities are examining the vehicle to determine the exact cause.
