A year-old jewellery theft worth around ₹10 lakh in Dehradun came to light after the accused allegedly posted an Instagram reel wearing the stolen diamond necklace. Rajpur Police arrested a former domestic help and recovered stolen diamond and gold jewellery from her possession.

The case is related to a house in Sikka Kimaya Green, located in the IT Park area under Rajpur police station. Complainant Nitisha Vats lodged an FIR on July 1, stating that her diamond and gold jewellery had gone missing nearly a year ago. Initially, she believed the ornaments had been misplaced or given to a relative, so she did not suspect theft.

The investigation took a dramatic turn when one of her acquaintances informed her that her former domestic help, Vimla (34), had uploaded an Instagram reel and photographs wearing a diamond necklace that appeared identical to the missing jewellery. After watching the reel, Nitisha identified the necklace as her own and immediately approached the police.

Acting on the complaint, a police team formed under the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police launched an investigation. Based on a tip-off, officers arrested Vimla from Johri Road on Friday. During the operation, police recovered the stolen diamond necklace, a gold locket, two gold rings, a gold pendant and an Oppo mobile phone from her possession.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that she had worked as a domestic helper at the complainant’s residence and had repeatedly seen expensive jewellery kept inside the house locker. Tempted by the valuables, she allegedly stole the ornaments when she got an opportunity.

Police said the accused later convinced her employer that the jewellery had probably been misplaced elsewhere, preventing immediate suspicion. She further revealed that she could not sell the diamond jewellery because of its high value and was searching for a buyer. The Instagram reel featuring the stolen necklace ultimately became the key piece of evidence that led to her arrest.
