The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has intensified its recovery drive against unpaid electricity bills. On Monday, the Ramnagar division witnessed a strict move when the power supply to an entire street was disconnected due to non-payment by 17 residents. Only two consumers were provided separate connections after verification of payment.
In a massive statewide campaign, 40 UPCL teams disconnected electricity connections of over 3,200 defaulters across both urban and rural areas. This is part of a larger recovery initiative being regularly monitored by officials.
Crackdown on electricity theft is also underway. Several cases of power theft have been detected in Chudiyala, Iqbalpur, and Jhabrera, and legal proceedings are being prepared against the culprits.
In Ramnagar, the sudden outage caused residents to rush to the office of Executive Engineer Anoop Saini, demanding restoration of supply. They were clearly instructed to settle pending dues before any reconnection would be considered. Superintendent Engineer Amit Kumar Sharma confirmed that the drive will continue and warned that defaulters will face firm action.
Meanwhile, in Barkot, officials revealed that the district panchayat has an outstanding bill of ₹24 lakh for the past five years. This could potentially leave Yamunotri pilgrims in the dark if the dues are not cleared soon. Executive Engineer Dharmveer Singh has issued a final warning, stating that the panchayat’s connection will be cut if payment is delayed further.
