Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is set to present two major gifts to athletes and the sports sector in Uttarakhand this year. The state will soon witness the beginning of construction for a Sports University in Haldwani and the launch of 23 sports academies across eight cities.
The foundation stone for the Sports University is scheduled to be laid on August 29, National Sports Day. Meanwhile, 23 academies will be established in cities such as Dehradun, Haridwar, and Haldwani — locations that hosted various sports disciplines during the 38th National Games and already have basic infrastructure in place. These academies will help maintain the existing facilities and provide structured training platforms for athletes. The official notification for the Sports University has already been issued.
Key Highlights:
38th National Games:
According to the government, Uttarakhand made a significant leap in sports during CM Dhami’s fourth year in office. The state successfully hosted the 38th National Games during its silver jubilee year, and local athletes bagged over 100 medals, placing Uttarakhand at 7th position in the overall medal tally.
New Sports Policy:
A new sports policy has been introduced, providing ₹1 to ₹2 crore as incentive for Olympic medal winners. Athletes who win medals at international and national levels are being offered government jobs. The incentive amounts have been doubled, and scholarships are being awarded to deserving players.
“Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports, which is a proud moment for us. The successful hosting of the National Games has created a vibrant sporting environment in the state. Athletes are highly motivated and performing exceptionally well. We will continue to make bold decisions and implement them to strengthen sports and athlete development.”
