Former soldier of the Fourth Garhwal Rifles (Nuranang) and international ultra trail runner Kalam Singh Bisht will be formally honoured by the Chief of Army Staff at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi on January 21, 2026. The recognition is being conferred for his long-standing contribution to national service, sports, and social work.
Kalam Singh Bisht served in the Indian Army for several years, where he was associated with the Fourth Garhwal Rifles. During his service, he was known for discipline and commitment to duty. After retirement, he remained active in public life through sports and community-based initiatives, extending his engagement with national service beyond the uniform.
In the field of sports, Bisht has represented India in international ultra trail running events. His participation in endurance competitions has brought attention to athletes from hilly regions and highlighted the potential of mountain sports from Uttarakhand at the global level.
Alongside sports, Bisht has worked extensively in social outreach through the Mundoli Riders Club. The initiative focuses on promoting fitness, discipline, de-addiction awareness, environmental protection, and self-reliance among children and youth in remote hill areas. The club has provided free training and guidance to underprivileged and rural children across parts of Uttarakhand.
Officials said the honour by the Army Chief recognises Bisht’s contribution across military service, sports representation, and grassroots social work. The ceremony is also expected to underline the role of retired soldiers in continuing nation-building efforts after active service.
