Almora: The forest department has started preparations for a scientific wildlife census in the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary to assess the actual population and movement of wild animals, including tigers, leopards, bears and deer.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Kumaon’s major protected forest areas and a popular tourist destination. Spread across around 47.59 square kilometres, the sanctuary is known for its rich biodiversity, dense oak and deodar forests and panoramic Himalayan views.

For the wildlife census, the sanctuary area has been divided into 50 grids. More than 100 camera traps will be installed across different forest sections to monitor wildlife activity and movement patterns.

Officials said the cameras will help study animal behaviour and habitat use in different parts of the sanctuary. A six-member departmental team along with senior wildlife experts will supervise the exercise.

The data collected through camera traps will be analysed to estimate the population, activity and habitat range of major wildlife species present in the sanctuary. Forest officials said the exercise will strengthen wildlife conservation and management efforts in the Binsar region while also helping experts better understand the local ecosystem. The survey is also expected to provide information about the presence and population of foxes in the sanctuary, which may help in preparing conservation strategies for the species.
