The Mohabbewala slope in Dehradun continues to remain a major accident-prone stretch, raising serious concerns over road safety and administrative inaction. Despite repeated claims of improvements, the situation on the ground tells a different story, with the stretch still posing a life-threatening risk to commuters.
Frequent road accidents at the slope have pushed authorities to review the situation multiple times, but most of the proposed measures have remained limited to official files. On-site conditions indicate that the stretch is still far from safe for both pedestrians and vehicle drivers.
A joint inspection was recently carried out by officials from the police, National Highways Authority, and Public Works Department. During the inspection, the team recommended installing rumble strips instead of traditional speed breakers to better control vehicle speed on the slope.
In addition, authorities proposed closing illegal cuts between Chandrabani and Mohabbewala and constructing proper dividers to prevent sudden vehicle movements that often lead to collisions. The team also stressed the need to make the road obstruction-free, highlighting that safety cannot rely on engineering solutions alone.
Encroachments by roadside shops affecting visibility on the slope have been identified, and the municipal corporation has been asked to take action. Similarly, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority has been instructed to repair non-functional street lights in the area.

However, none of these recommendations have been implemented on the ground so far. As a result, accidents continue to occur, exposing the gap between planning and execution and leaving commuters vulnerable on what has now become known as a ‘killer slope’.
