Emergency landing of helicopter in Uttarakhand linked to sudden downdraft

Dehradun: A major accident was averted on Wednesday when a helicopter returning to Dehradun from Badrinath was forced to make an emergency landing due to sudden weather changes and strong downdraft conditions in a valley area.

According to the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the Bell 407 helicopter of Trans Bharat Aviation Pvt Ltd was operating a regular two-dham charter service when weather conditions deteriorated suddenly during the flight.

Officials said a strong downdraft developed in the valley region, creating difficult flying conditions for the helicopter. Sensing the danger, pilot Captain Anupam Chaudhary carried out a precautionary emergency landing to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.

UCADA stated that Captain Anupam Chaudhary is a former Indian Air Force pilot and his experience and timely decision helped prevent a possible accident. Initial inspection revealed minor damage to the outer portion of the helicopter, but no passenger or crew member was injured in the incident.

The authority said several safety measures are already in place to ensure safe helicopter operations during the Char Dham Yatra. These include deployment of IMD officials, weather monitoring systems, automated weather stations, PTZ cameras and temporary air traffic control arrangements. UCADA added that strict operational and safety conditions have also been included in agreements signed with helicopter operators.

Following the incident, technical inspection and regulatory procedures are being carried out in coordination with aviation authorities and the operator.

What is a downdraft?

In mountainous and narrow valley regions, wind direction and speed can change rapidly. Air currents flowing downward from mountains are known as mountain downdrafts. If a helicopter gets caught in a strong downdraft, it can suddenly lose altitude rapidly. Aviation experts say forcing the helicopter upward in such conditions can increase the risk of an accident, making the pilot’s judgment crucial during emergencies.
