Yamunotri: An 82-year-old pilgrim from Tamil Nadu died after suffering a heart attack on the Yamunotri trek route on Saturday. The incident took place near Nau Kainchi while the devotee was returning after offering prayers at Yamunotri Dham.
According to officials, the pilgrim, identified as Shambhu Keval, complained of uneasiness and chest pain before collapsing unconscious on the route.
Health workers and personnel deployed on Yatra duty immediately provided first aid and shifted him to the health centre at Jankichatti. However, doctors declared him dead after examination.
In-charge of the health centre, Dr Akhil Rana, confirmed that the elderly pilgrim died due to a heart attack.
Police have been informed about the incident and further legal formalities are being carried out.
Officials said three pilgrims have died since the start of the Yamunotri Yatra this season. Most of the deaths have reportedly been linked to heart attacks and sudden health complications.
Authorities said increasing crowd pressure, the difficult trekking route and low oxygen levels in high-altitude areas are creating health challenges for elderly pilgrims.
The administration and health department have advised pilgrims, especially senior citizens and people with existing medical conditions, to undergo health check-ups before the journey, take proper rest and remain cautious during the pilgrimage. Medical teams and health camps have also been deployed along the route for emergency assistance.
