Dehradun: The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) on Sunday sealed an allegedly unauthorized Jama Masjid located on the Kandogal-Thano road in Kudiyal Gram Panchayat of Doiwala block. The action was carried out in the presence of police and administrative officials amid heightened security arrangements.
The mosque had been at the center of controversy for several months, with various Hindu organizations demanding action, claiming that the structure had been constructed without proper authorization. MDDA had fixed June 1 as the final date for the sealing process.
In view of the scheduled action, security was tightened in the area from early morning. Members of Bajrang Dal and other organizations had also begun gathering in the Thano area. However, officials completed the sealing operation early in the day, preventing any confrontation or law-and-order issues.
A heavy police presence was maintained throughout the operation to ensure that both sides remained separated and no untoward incident occurred. Naib Tehsildar Rajendra Singh Rawat, Senior Sub-Inspector Naveen Dangwal of Ranipokhri Police Station and MDDA officials were present during the action.
Following the sealing, some members of the Muslim community reportedly objected to the move, describing it as one-sided. On the other hand, representatives of several Hindu organizations welcomed the action, stating that the administration had finally acted on their long-pending demand.
After the operation, members of some organizations performed a havan near Thano Chowk to express support for the administrative action.
Local traders also extended support during the operation, with the main Thano market remaining closed for the day. Many shopkeepers gathered at the town square while authorities continued monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, area panchayat member Mahipal Singh Krishali alleged that he received death threats from a group of women while passing near the mosque after the sealing operation. The allegation triggered anger among some activists, who attempted to move toward the site.
Police and administrative officials intervened immediately and brought the situation under control. Authorities assured all parties that the allegations would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken if the claims were found to be valid.
