Residents of Pithoragarh experienced two back-to-back earthquakes late Thursday night, causing widespread panic but no reported damage. According to the Disaster Management Department, the epicenter of the quake was located in Baitadi, Nepal.
The first tremor, recorded at 1:33 AM, had a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale. It was felt across several areas including the district headquarters, Dharchula, Didihat, Kanalichhina, and Jhulaghat. As the ground shook, many people rushed out of their homes in fear.
Twelve minutes later, a second tremor of 3.7 magnitude was also recorded, intensifying the anxiety among residents. District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Mehar confirmed the epicenter was in Nepal and added that no loss of life or property has been reported so far. People took a sigh of relief after the tremors subsided.
