AIIMS Rishikesh Develops Non-Invasive Postmortem Technique

In a groundbreaking development, AIIMS Rishikesh has introduced a new method for conducting postmortems without dissection. Termed “Minimally Invasive Autopsy,” the technique utilizes laparoscopy, endoscopy, and CT scans to examine internal organs, offering a more precise and humane alternative to traditional autopsy procedures.

Traditionally, postmortem involves cutting open the body from the throat to the abdomen and skull, often causing emotional distress to the deceased’s family. This innovation aims to address such sensitivities while maintaining scientific accuracy.

Dr. Ashish from the Department of Forensic Medicine stated that this is the first time in India such a combined technique is being implemented, which also allows for the collection of viscera and biopsy samples without dissection. The initiative has been led by department head Dr. Binay Bastian and supported by AIIMS Director Prof. Meenu Singh.

This advancement could significantly increase consent for postmortem examinations in sensitive cases and enhance the quality of forensic investigations across the country.
